For Summer 2024, Oxford American presents the Outside Issue, dedicated to the outdoors of our region and to the environmental experiences of our people.
The issue will get on-the-ground and in the dirt: James Beard-winning writer Michael Adno will report on the mysterious practice of worm-grunting in the Florida panhandle; C. J. Bartunek, managing editor of the Georgia Review, will tell the story of one of Georgia’s first legal marijuana production facilities. We will also explore connection to land and place through work by Tauheed Rahim II, a Memphis artist and rapper, who will dig into family history and excavate a present-day battle with an agency seeking to acquire his family’s property in North Memphis. Other stories will cover a fishing rodeo in deep South Louisiana, present-day road-tripping as influenced by the original Green Book, and James Baldwin’s friendship with the Alabaman artist, Fred Nall Hollis. This issue will examine land and sea, exploration and groundedness through the lens of our outdoor spaces.
Pre-orders of the Outside Issue will ship in mid-May, and the issue will become available on select newsstands on June 4th, 2024.
